I Bet You Didn’t Know Your Phone Could Do This!
Smartphones are not just for calling or texting anymore—they are equipped with a multitude of tools and features that are useful in everyday life.
Here’s a look at some handy smartphone features and how to effectively use them:
Testing Your Remote Control’s Battery
Check your remote control’s battery life with your smartphone’s camera.
Simply open your camera and point it towards your remote control, then press any button on your remote. If the batteries are working, you will see a light flickering at the top of your remote where the sensor is. If the light is faint or nonexistent, it may be time for new batteries.
Document Scanner
Gone are the days of clunky scanner machines! Your handheld hero can also scan documents with a few simple steps.
Apple Users: Open the Notes app, create a new note, tap the camera icon, and select “Scan Documents”.
Android Users: Open the Google Drive app, and tap “+”, then click “Scan”.
Foreign Language Translator
Have you ever wished you could speak another language while traveling abroad? Now you can since most smartphones come preloaded with translation assistance.
Apple Users: Siri can translate several languages; just ask, “Hey Siri, how do you say [phrase] in [language]?”
Android Users: Google Assistant offers translation features, or use the Google Translate app.
Magnifying Glass
If you need help reading small print, such as on medicine bottles, menus, and labels, the magnification setting is another nifty feature.
Apple Users: Enabled via Settings under Accessibility; it uses the camera to magnify text or objects.
Android Users: Look for “Magnification” or similar options in Accessibility settings.
Metal Detector
Turn your smartphone into a basic metal detector which can be used to locate lost keys or find hidden treasures. Metal detectors can be downloaded through various apps in both the Apple Store and Google Play Store.
Tape Measure
Not having a tape measure when you need one is frustrating- luckily most of us have one right in our pocket!
Apple Users: Download the Measure app which uses AR (Augmented Reality) to measure real-world objects.
Android Users: Similar AR-based apps available on Google Play, like AR Ruler.
Your Wallet
There’s no need to carry a physical wallet now that you have one inside your phone. Wallet apps simplify transactions and enhances security with features like facial recognition and fingerprint scanning.
Apple: Apple Wallet allows you to carry digital versions of credit/debit cards, boarding passes, tickets, and more.
Android: Google Wallet offers similar functionalities.
